10 REASONS FOR CHOOSING POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE OF BEJA

RECOGNITION AND REPUTATION OF TRAINING

IPBeja courses are accredited by the Agência Nacional de Acreditação (A3ES - “National Accreditation Agency”), with an increasing reputation among employers for having study programmes in line with the needs of the labour market, including integrated internships. The Institute’s portfolio, distributed among four schools, includes: higher professional technical courses (120 ECTS); bachelor’s degrees (180 or 240 ECTS); post-graduate and master’s degrees (90 or 120 ECTS). Some of these courses are offered in distance and after-hours mode.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY

Located in the south of Portugal, IPBeja has its headquarters in the city of Beja, conveniently equidistant from Lisbon (177 km) and Seville (217 km); 110 km from Sines, with its deep-water port, an intermediary point on the coastal belt between Tróia (with its 65 km of white sand beaches) and Cabo de S. Vicente, located in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, in the Algarve. The city of Beja is serviced by buses and trains, and has an international airport under development.

QUALITY OF THE CAMPUS, LOCATION AND TRANSPORT

The IPBeja campus has 4 schools, residences and student support services, located in a single space 5 minutes from the city’s historical centre, where the main night life centres are located. A campus perfectly integrated into the city’s urban grid, adjacent to the district hospital and serviced by public transport, connecting it to bus and train stations, while also ensuring that IPBeja is connected to centres for agricultural learning located close to the city.

SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

IPBeja is located in one of Portugal’s safest cities, allowing its students to enjoy high quality public spaces, where the hot summer nights are perfect for fun and socialising under an immense starry sky, so close to the Dark Sky Alqueva reserve. At the same time, the long and well-lit days favour the discovery of one of Europe’s least polluted regions, characterised by the richness of its biodiversity and the beauty of its landscape, whether of its plains or its mountains.

SOCIAL SUPPORT AND ACCOMMODATION

IPBeja provides social support resources in addition to the General Management and Higher Education Scholarships, in line with the individual requirements and integration of each student. There are also inclusive measures for the purpose of promoting social and academic merit, as well as their physical and psychological well-being. For this purpose, IPBeja has three support offices: Psychopedagogic; for Sports Activities; and for Food (nutrition). For accommodating students who choose the academic residences, the Institute has 310 beds, distributed into 4 residences integrated into the city’s urban grid.

FELLOWSHIP AND TRADITIONS OF THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY

IPBeja’s size gives it an atmosphere of fellowship between professors and students, favouring individualised support and networking, powered by investment into collaborative platforms of teaching and learning, essential for distance learning and as a supplement to classroom teaching. The close-knit academic community enables a strong sense of belonging and preservation of academic traditions, maintained by the association of students and course committees, perfectly integrated into the surrounding community.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND INTERNATIONALISATION

IPBeja offers an inclusive environment of great cultural diversity, thanks to its tradition of openness that characterises the people of Alentejo. International students, including those entering the International Student Statute or as part of the ERASMUS programme, represent more than 40 different countries. Although primacy is given to the Portuguese language and teaching in Portuguese, the Institute also offers courses in English.

HERITAGE, CULTURE AND TOURISM

IPBeja benefits from its location in a city and in a region where its age-old history translates into a vast heritage and a culture of many expressions, particularly the “Arte Chocalheira” (“Manufacture of Cowbells”), the “Cante Alentejano” (“Alentejo Singing”) or the cuisine, based on the Mediterranean diet, recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage of humanity. A region whose heritage is accompanied by unmatched scenic and cultural assets for sustainable development, home to several economic sectors, such as tourism and cultural and creative industries.

RESEARCH, EMPLOYABILITY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Applied research in the regional socio-economic context, supported by IPBeja’s participation in the Sistema Regional de Transferência de Tecnologia (“Regional Technology Transfer System”) and in the Engage SKA (Square Kilometre Array) project, make the Institute a fundamental partner in the transfer of the technology and knowledge necessary for regional development, powering the success of structural investments concerning the irrigation system surrounding the Alqueva dam (the largest artificial lake in Europe). The involvement of students in experimental and research activities is a common practice at IPBeja, thus encouraging employability and e
ntrepreneurship.

COLLABORATING WITH THE COMMUNITY

IPBeja encourages collaboration and regional, national and international partnerships. Of note are its collaborations with: Secondary and Professional schools, contributing to academic and vocational guidance of younger students; autonomous communities in the creation of synergy that promotes development; with organisations of producers and sectoral associations in the promotion of learning adapted to the labour market; with incubators, companies and local development associations in the streamlining of an entrepreneurial ecosystem based on technology and knowledge.
