Objectives and Methodologies
The Occupational Therapy study cycle aims to provide technical, scientific and human training, to enable students at the end of the course:
o Provide occupational therapy services, aimed to individual, family, community and organizations;
o Participate in the management of Occupational Therapy services;
o Participate in education related to their field of study;
o Participate in research studies, promoting the scientific development of the profession.
Students training is developed around Occupational Science, Therapy and Rehabilitation, Biomedical, Social and Behavioral Sciences, starting always with the assumption that Occupational Therapy is the art and science that through occupation, allows the active participation of the individual in meaningful occupations.
Occupational Therapy promotes health, well-being and occupational justice, contributing to an inclusive society where the individual can participate and develop his occupational potential.
The Occupational Therapy study cycle is organized in 8 semesters and it lasts for four years. Each semester develops a specific theme following the life cycle of the person and consists on a set of courses aimed to develop skills in each area. It is organized according to the ontogenic development of human beings and the content covered by the different courses are directed to areas in which there is evaluation and intervention of occupational therapy in different periods of life of the human being (children, young , adults and elderly), namely:
o Neurological disorders;
o Orthopedic disorders;
o Rheumatologic disorders;
o Psychosocial disorders;
o Development disorders;
o Assistive Technology;
o Social, Family, Educational and Professional Reintegration;
o Among others.
The Occupational Therapy study cycle should prepare the student for (ESTSP, 2006):
o Demonstrate professional conduct skills and interpersonal communication with clients, colleagues and other health professionals;
o Demonstrate evaluation, intervention planning, intervention and re-evaluation skills, using specific instruments of Occupational Therapy and according to specific occupational needs of each individual;
o Recognize and act on the continuous training needs as a growth function and maintenance of professional skills;
o Collaborate in the administration and management of the department in which is integrated;
o Analyze and participate in the development of professional practice;
o Develop and participate in research projects.
The list of the unit courses provided for the Occupational Therapy Course takes into account the following aspects:
a) It is a study cycle predominantly in the area of Occupational Therapy;
b) Habilitation for the occupation in order to promote the health and well-being;
c) Scientific areas necessarily addressed it will be applied in a perspective predominantly applied in technological terms, in order to enable professional career after the 1st cycle.
Based on these assumptions, the logic of the composition of the curriculum of the Occupational Therapy study cycle is as follows, taking the semester as a pedagogical functional course unit:
o The two semesters of the 1st year are integrated with generic unit courses, applied to sciences and basic subjects to the more specific learning following;
o The remaining semesters are organized according to the ontogenic development of human beings, and all the contents are covered under the occupational point of view. Throughout the second year the contents are covered following the chain of dysfunction, evaluation and intervention, always with a strong connection to the practice of occupational therapy, largely through the clinical placements.
